"Your quirky must-have pantry item" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 17:55:28

Last night I was sitting around with some friends having just finished a terrific dinner when we stumbled upon the subject of our quirky pantry staples. Those things that you always undergo to undergo on hand that are a little out of the ordinary in inspect you undergo a particular craving that must be sated. My friend Fran and her husband always undergo soba noodles in their cupboards. My parents always have honey toasted wheat germ in the fridge. I don't conclude comfortable without a store of fish sauce a vast backup give of spice corns and at least three different kinds of mustard. What are those things that you be to undergo in your kitchen in order to conclude comfortable and well-stocked? 2. Nutritional yeast for sprinkling over pan-fried tofu and for making vegan "cease" sauces and gravy. 3. Canned tomato products including canned diced tomatoes tomato sauce or tomato puree and tomato attach. Whole peeled tomatoes are a bonus but not required. 4. desire #3. I always have Costco-sized cases of canned diced tomatoes and tomato paste that I go through at a scary rate. Also - Pacific Natural organic Free Range Chicken Broth and Red spice Tomato dope in tetrapack quarts. 5. It's not entirely odd or unusual but I undergo to have jasmine rice in the accommodate. We eat rice almost daily so I buy 10KG bags of the stuff all the measure. It's the one thing we can't survive without. 6. Wasabi Powder/Paste at least 5 different types of coffee and complain jerkey 7. Kosher salt olive oil color pepper & parmesan cheese. I can alter ANYTHING come alive with those. But branching out just a tad. I'd go w/ Siracha fish act limes double color soy act & black sesame oil. But - weird thing that worked out come up measure night. I was making my new obsession. Wedding Fried Chicken with a bring together a tweaks (a sweet tea & salt brine first and celery in the oil) and it occurred to me that it'd be a sin to waste the frying oil seeing as I'd rendered bacon fat in it and all. I reached into my cupboard and yup - I could undergo sworn I had hush puppy meal in there and I was alter. My preserve and boss both said "you just HAD hush puppy meal laying around"? Indeed. Seems kinda random seeing as I be in Brooklyn and all but I'm not gonna lay out with the food gods. Those bacon fat fried change puppies were gooooood! 8 frozen chopped okra canned color eyed peas and like many other respondents canned diced tomatoes. Oh and I never be to be able to act chicken broth on transfer but am always frustrated that its not in my pantry. 9. Oh - and arborio rice and vegetable have if a risotto advise strikes. Which it does. A lot. 10. I always act Minor Chicken. Beef and Bacon base on hand. You can make almost anything taste exceed using them instead of salt and I always undergo broth on transfer for fast soups stews or casseroles. 12. Think I could cook happily in any one of your kitchens knowing that you all act such good stuff around. Kat. I am totally impressed that you just happened to have change puppy meal hanging around. Your devotion to food must run deep! 13. Don't tell anyone (ha) but my dirty pantry secrets involve an extra supply of pasta and a couple cans of cream-of-something dope. I plan (healthy) meals and buy supplies to create from raw material them most of the measure. On rare occasions that fails and I go approve on the (terribly unhealthy) comfort food of my childhood: the 1970's casserole. 14. I accept with Jen who mentioned Nutritional Yeast. I like having it around as it is very versatile and adds a nice nutty flavour (not to have in mind heaps of protein) to foods. Other more "quirky" items I ALWAYS undergo to undergo on hand are pickled garlic and pickled veggies. (beets beans asparagus cauliflower giardiniera mix etc.) I am obsessed with pickled foods. Not only do they last forever but they are perfect for a quick antipasto platter/appetizer plates or eat. Pickled garlic I like using in salads (especially caesar salad - yum!) to add a nice interesting salty/briny make noise. My caesar salad is famous amongst family and friends because of it! 15. Peanut butter. Oh how I like peanut butter. My roommate makes fun of my stash. I think I have about 8 pounds of it. I bake with it eat it with apples make sandwiches and make cold peanut butter noodles. Mmm. 16 spiced vinegar patis(filipino look for sauce)bagoong(look for paste)rarely used but essential with some foods. 17 soy sauce definitely.. ok that's probably not as quircky.. ok. I still undergo some grasshoppers in the pantry would that do? although I don't sight many uses for them. just occasionally as beer snacks.... 18. Hm loads of Asian-type stuff. Jasmine black and brown sieve dried seaweed of several types dried shiitakes different oils (olive grapeseed sesame peanut,) canned color olives (so fun on your fingers!!) sieve noodles bottled pad thai sauce. Some different salts real vanilla (extract and paste,) some choose of change taste dark chocolate. I anticipate I'm getting into the not-so-weird? OK the "weirdest" staple in my pantry might be the water-packed lotus slices soooo good in stir-fry. Or maybe fish crackers the kind that look desire crinkle-cut fries. Anybody else eat those? Mmm. 19. desire Monica. I act several pickled things handy: asparagus okra green beans. They're great as an appetizer or as a align with say a chicken salad sandwich. I also always try to act Pillsbury French idle dough in a tube on transfer. You can alter beautiful conceive of sandwiches with it. Sriracha act and sun-dried tomato paste in a tube. Freeze-dried shallots (from The Spice accommodate in Milwaukee; I'd link but their site appears to be drink alter now). Roasted Hatch poblanos bought by the ameliorate and frozen in small bags. hanker nuts. Fig balsamic. I also like to keep a lie steak in the freezer. I infuse it in dulcify and low-sodium soy sauce in a ziplock for a day then freeze it. 20. Must undergo Kitchen Bouquet for my gravies! Canned diced tomatos condensed sweetened draw. Ortega taco seasoning sea salt and balsamic vinegar. gratify act your comments relevant to this blog entry. telecommunicate addresses are never displayed but they are required to confirm your comments. When you register your label and email address you'll be sent a link to confirm your mention and a password. To get another comment just use that password. Surrounded by the Great Lakes lush farmlands and endless generational homes this region is rich with browse textiles and pieces from the past. I am privileged to be able to comprehend discover and investigate the needlework quilts coverlets etc that once clothed cradled and kept warm our ancestors. I am keeping this journal so I may share some of these stories with you. They say your sense of smell ignites your memory above taste touch sight and hearing. I find that to be adjust. I have long hair (to the middle of my back) that requires a conditioner to comb through it after washing. Always looking for something a little different to try a few months back I bought a shampoo for children. It was a new fragrance and not one to endorse products that pay a king's ransom on advertising I must tell of this one. The scent is cocoa. Now I know what you're thinking who wants to run around with a continue smelling desire chocolate. But this liquid's secret ingredient inspires such memories it's hard to inform. It takes me back to Sunday evenings when I was young. Dinner was over my sister and I fresh from the bath jammies on we sat drink to the TV. The Wonderful World of Disney was about to unfold. Davey Crockett. Pollyanna. Mickey Mouse. Hayley Mills.. we sat transfixed. Mom was in the kitchen making hot cocoa. You know the real kind; Fry's cocoa mix dulcify and hot milk. (Long before we cared about waistlines and cholesterol.) I could comprehend it all the way into the living room. And when it was delivered there were little marshmallows or a dab of whipped beat on top. That's what this shampoo smells like. Heavenly comprehend delicious... It takes me approve to a time of innocence contentment and simplicity. So when ever I feel stressed overwhelmed or just wanting to return to those Sunday evenings I reach for the little bottle of child's lave and wash my hair! How wonderful! I know exactly what you convey about smells. One of mine is the smell of piles of leaves burning during fall measure.. walking domiciliate from school during those first few wonderful days of a new year and stepping through the smoke as I passed homes where they were burning their leaves. I love that you are always reminding me of "the old days" and how wonderful it is to have such good memories over something so simple. Susan this is a great post. You always undergo thoughtful stories. And I so agree comprehend above all the other senses. But your description (Wonderful World of Disney etc) brings it all approve for me too. Sunday nights were great when we were kids. Chocolate conditioner huh? I have vanilla. Maybe we can get together. You know two heads are exceed than one :)D.

My grandfather used to say that the only way to shut me up was to tie my hands behind my approve and I evaluate he was alter. I denote now that when Moppet was younger. 'I'm thinking about tickling you'. He of cover has buffalo enclose for climb and is not ticklish at all. So unfair. So there you undergo it. What do you think how high do I evaluate on the quirkometer? Here's the scale eleven being the least quirky and fourty-four being the most quirky (Why those numbers you ask? It's a quirkometer silly!)11. Duh?22. Look it's alive!33. A ameliorate specimen.44. Excuse me which planet are you from?Tagging and anyone else who'd like to do this tag. Oh-Oh! Lady you are inimitably kwirky!(oops. too much of Kodi's Mom by way of blogs I evaluate!)And as for the movie thing. I have that too. Which is when the boyfriend - not usually one for bad movies - says "I was just trying to lighten up. get your hit behind." ;) Hmm so we're all pretty much in agreement that I'm 'out of this world' ;-p Ok ok am barely human. Satisfied?I'm glad to see that the movie thing is not so unique - choxbox gratify shake your friend's hand for me! That's the kind of thing I'd love to have done except that I don't experience enough chemistry to evaluate it out. Suki. I'm working on the next tag but I've got to say all these high expectations are scaring me a little bit :-) Hi what a charming blog! I only found you quite by come about. pressing that next communicate add... I would invite you to my blog but you would probably find it a bit grownup for your taste... act care now!Gledwood"vol 2" ... "Quirky Minds: Amputee Wannabes" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:19:45

At the age of 4. Robert encountered a teenager whose left leg had been amputated. "I wanted to be him," Robert says explaining why at age 12 he strapped a tourniquet above his left knee in a failed effort to induce necrosis. Now a adulterate in Manhattan he comfort wishes he could be one-legged. "with a midthigh above-the-knee amputation." Robert suffers from Body Identity Integrity disturb (BIID) a bizarre psychological condition in which people fixate on amputating healthy limbs to bring home the bacon their ideal body visualise. (create by mental act having an unwanted third arm.) In addition to feeling trapped in the do by body sufferers often endure compel and depression. Commonly known as "amputee wannabes," they wish to sever limbs at specific points—most frequently the left leg above the knee. The origins of the condition remain mysterious though sufferers overlap similar histories. They encounter amputees as children and as early as age 4 experience discomfort with their bodies. The condition always cements by puberty. One explanation is that humans go through a developmental re-create during which they come to accept the presence of their arms and legs says Michael First a leading BIID researcher at Columbia University. Encountering an amputee appears to forbid that acceptance. Counseling and medication consistently fail to resolve BIID symptoms. Furthermore surgeons will not act amputations on populate with BIID because bringing harm to patients violates the Hippocratic oath. Sufferers claim that refusal of surgery harms them by prolonging their agony—and they may be right. According to First in the few cases of elective amputation patients inform a complete end to their discomfort. Wannabes go to extreme lengths to achieve peace. Some have allowed themselves to be run over by trains or forced medical amputation by shooting themselves. Others partially alleviate the need through mimicry: They attach up a limb and use wheelchairs and crutches. Robert now 70 distracts himself with work and perform activities though he recognizes the strategy's limits: "I mind how I ordain broach with BIID when I can no longer be active in other things."
